Sudden Death/Mercy Kill has been reworked AGAIN, this time it's called Hunter's Mark. In the original version (Sudden Death) it had a chance to kill an enemy instantly, depending on how much HP the enemy had left. This meant if the enemy had taken 2% damage it would have a 2% chance to die to SD, 90% damage would be a 90% chance. This felt a little overpowered, so it was reworked into Mercy Kill where the chance to kill was halved (90% damage was only 45% to kill, 99% damage was 49%).

The issue is that there was no way to prevent SD/MK from being used on a boss, so I reworked it a little bit. It still uses the chance calculations from Mercy Kill (HP% lost / 2) but instead of instantly killing, it applies a status called 'Marked' to the enemy. When an enemy is marked they will lose 33% of their HP every turn, killing them after 3 turns. During this period attacks also deal 3x as much damage, allowing you to speed up the process if you wish. The advantage to this method is that I can make bosses immune to being marked.

I'm not sure if people agree with this assessment though. I want bosses to be difficult and not easily circumvented, but I still want to encourage freedom for players to tackle situations how they wish. Hunter's Mark costs half of Sophia's CE to use (assuming level 99) and it doesn't have the greatest odds of actually working:

  • 10% chance at 80% HP left
  • 25% chance at 50% HP left
  • 40% chance at 20% HP left
  • 49% chance at 1% HP left

Restricting it from boss usage could make it effectively useless, especially considering that it's a late game skill. Sophia needs to be level 60 to unlock it, making it her final ability. Then again the final major area of the game has a lot of high HP enemies and you'll probably be level 60 (or close) by that point so it might still be useful, I'd have to see how people use it.
